Synthetic Landscapes & Festival Enjoyment

From mid-March to the end of October an approximate 32 million people will travel across the country to different music hubs at one of the many famous American outdoor music festivals. Some of the larger festivals draw in over 100,000 people of the weekend-long events, and Austin City Limits (ACL) collectively pulled in 450,000 people over the dual-weekend experience in 2017.

Most festivals are held in the same location year and require extensive planning, preparation, and recovery work after the 3-6 day events to keep the groundcover manageable for the rest of the year.  But what if this were not the case?

What if venue spaces could get their outdoor areas reopened to the public quicker, with less work, then is traditionally possible?

In 2015 Rock in Rio USA took over one of the most popular travel cities in America: Las Vegas.  The 200,000-person dual 2-day weekends featured music from A-list artists and plenty of entertainment between shows including a Ferris wheel, themed Rock Streets, a VIP viewing area, a wedding chapel, and a 64-foot-high zip line.  The 40-acre event space was outfitted with over half a million square feet of Act Global landscape turf to have a ground cover that could manage the hot, arid climate and extremely high foot-traffic of Rock in Rio USA.  The artificial grass kept the festival’s attendees dirt and mud free while offering a soft surface to lounge on while listening to the bands.  For the “City of Rock”‘s management team, the synthetic landsacpe meant minimal maintenance while preserving natural aesthetic value.
